Join Ted Waters and Zoe Beckerman, the nation's leading authorities on Head Start law, for this two-day training on critical risk management and compliance issues in Head Start. We'll cover what risk management means in a legal context and how best to build systems that protect your program. We will also address some of the biggest problem areas for programs (including hot spots from program, fiscal, and HR such as criminal background checks, timekeeping and self-assessments) and proffer tips for minimizing your exposure, including ideas about ensuring systems with built-in feedback mechanisms to help keep you operating a high quality program. We'll even discuss the OHS Monitoring Protocol to highlight issue areas and solutions. Both days will include tips and techniques to help your program stay organized, documented correctly, and within the bounds of the law that applies to Head Start and Early Head Start. Sound Beginnings: Best Practices in Early Literacy

The Sound Beginnings special track provides instruction for early childhood educators on critical early literacy topics. The workshop is intended to help educators understand current research and best practices. Topics include code-focused and explicit instruction, alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness, phonics, print awareness, handwriting, oral language, and shared reading.

ERSEA: Determining, verifying and documenting eligibility

This session will present information on determining, verifying and documenting eligibility within the context of ERSEA. This session will lay the groundwork for implementing eligibility consistent with the changes made through the 2007 Head Start Act. Participants will understand how to strengthen procedures to determine, verify, certify and maintain records regarding eligibility. At the end of this session, you will:

  • Understand how to certify documents
  • Understand how to establish procedures to verify and determine eligibility records
  • Understand how to accurately determine eligibility of homeless families
  • Understand how to establish policies and procedures for eligibility violations
  • Understand how to establish training policies for eligibility.

Reading, Through the Eyes of a Child
Presenter: Lois Wachtel

Join Miss Lois on a voyage into the early childhood classroom, as we look at reading through the eyes of our children. Together, we will bring together phonological awareness and whole language. We'll design class books that will encourage us to stretch familiar story; watch as a potato chip can, a silly sock, and a pizza box become stories. We'll move and interact with some fun songs, all of which will bring the joy of learning to read into your classroom. Totally interactive and fun learning, with a few giggles added.

Miss Lois will be joined by a special guest, David Kisor - David is the Music Director at Children, Inc., a non-profit agency offering nationally accredited early education and care throughout Northern Kentucky for infants through the school age child. Mr. David is a songwriter, performer, and teacher with a Master’s Degree in Composition from the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music.
