Leading and managing in Head Start is rewarding, challenging, and complex. The NHSA Academy Administrator and Mid-Manager Credential Program 2010 is designed to raise the bar in Head Start program administration and management by focusing on a combination of critical skills, knowledge, and approaches that support high quality service provision, organizational development, and effective strategies.
The NHSA Academy, an intensive four-day course that comprises mini-modules, is offered to Head Start directors, managers, and other Head Start professionals. Knowledgeable and dynamic presenters, called Visiting Faculty, provide daily lectures and extended learning experiences that help learners translate theory into practice. The Academy also offers opportunities for participants to share with colleagues and learn new skills and resources.
The NHSA Academy content is made up of a series of learning modules. The module sessions for both managers and administrators are offered jointly to encourage an understanding of the different management levels and to provide a model for management interchange. Each module session is an hour and a half.

To download the 2010 Academy agenda, click here.
Administrators and Mid-Managers will follow the same daily coursework agenda; however, synthesis groups and Capstone proposals will vary according to the credential the candidate wishes to receive.
Each candidate will register to receive only one of these credentials. The credential you select should be based upon the skills that you would like to support the requirements of your current position. Since no two Head Start programs are alike and each is designed to meet unique community needs, deciding which credential is best for you may depend on how your program is structured and the role you play in your program. To decide which credential is best for you, the following may be used as guidance.
A Mid-Manager may focus on skills needed to support the day-to-day implementation of practices and standards that uphold the provision of quality services. Mid-Managers often carry such position titles as manager, specialist, or coordinator. Occasionally, program directors serving in large agencies with many administrative layers have opted to receive a Mid-Manager credential.
An administrator may focus on administrative practices that address the oversight and coordination of program functions, systems, and program operations. Administrators may carry the title of program director and, therefore, have responsibility for all program operations. However, others who are serving at the administrative level of a program but may oversee only one or two specific program areas may also choose to receive this credential.
