National Head Start Manager and Director Academy

Relevant to the new demands on Head Start managers, the NHSA Director and Manager Academy provides a focus on leadership development, risk management, systems, and community partnerships. In an intensive week-long setting. distinguished facilitators and senior managers from highly effective Head Start programs will share their extensive knowledge and substantial skills in four day-long learning modules. Each day will be split between presentation, activities and case study. Time will be allocated for networking and reflection.

The Academy is designed exclusively for program leaders, from the selection of facilitators, to the design of course-work and the planned on-going dialogue. Attendees will gain a portfolio of knowledge and skills that will enable them to effectively link excellence and accountability in their own programs.


 

Day 1: Leadership in a Publicly Funded Program

An examination of the keys to leadership in an era of accountability and transparency.

 

 

  • Ethics;
  • Governance (Board fiduciary and legal responsibilities);
  • Board Communications;
  • Leadership in a Multi-purpose or education agency. Professional development of senior staff and advisors;
  • Succession planning;
  • Community leadership practices to ensure your program is set apart.

Day 2: Achieving Excellence through Strategic Decision Making

What is the the role of strategic planning in achieving excellence?
 
 
  • an overview of strategic planning models;
  •  resource management and goal setting;
  • data driven decision making; and
  • balancing strategic demands of a Head Start program within a larger organization.

Day 3: Management Systems to Reduce Risk

A deep examination of the systems high performing organizations must have in place to assure they meet all Head Start/Early Head Start operating requirements. Representatives from exemplary grantees will review how they engage staff in the process of implementing, evaluating, and revising management systems.
 
 
  • promising practices and agency pitfalls;
  • how best to adapt systems to new requirements;
  • differences between statutory requirements, regulatory requirements, and policy clarification/guidance from OHS;
  • characteristics of efficient and effective management systems (communication, planning, ongoing monitoring, record-keeping and reporting).

Day 4: Creating a Climate of Accountability in Partnerships

A focus on strategies that ensure all partnerships support a grantee’s need to prosper and be fully accountable. Senior managers from exemplary grantees will provide a realistic perspective on using partnerships to attain program excellence.
 
 
  • how to engage current community partners to support agency objectives;
  • working with partners whose actions have resulted in risk or non-compliance for your agency;
  • terminating partnerships.
