Legislative Update Week of March 16, 2009

Kudos to the Ohio Head Start delegation!

Their efforts led to a new bill that was introduced on March 10th.  HR 1405 would amend the Internal Revenue Code to allow Head Start teachers and aides the same above-the-line deduction for school supplies that is currently allowed for elementary and secondary school teachers.

2009 Omnibus Appropriation

Just recently (on February 25th), the House introduced and voted on HR. 1105, the omnibus appropriations bill for FY 2009. The bill passed the House 245-178.

Legislative Update Week of January 16, 2009

$2.1 Billion for Head Start in Stimulus Package!

On Friday of last week, the House and Senate voted in favor of the conference committee's version of the stimulus package consisting of a mix of tax breaks and spending for a total of about $787 billion. We are thrilled that Head Start programs did very well in this package.  A total of $2.1 billion will be appropriated for our programs. Congratulations and thanks for all your hard work!

Legislative Update Week of January 28, 2009

Special thanks to all of you who joined us in record attendance at our Leadership Institute this week! With a huge audience, hundreds strong, we heard from Congresswoman Hirono and Congressman Polis about their views for the future of early childhood issues, Joan Lombardi, David Johns (Senior Advisor to Senator Kennedy) as well as longstanding leaders in the Head Start community and our advocacy partners.
