The Head Start Act, 2007, requires Head Start programs establish ongoing communications between the Head Start agency and LEAs to develop "continuity of developmentally appropriate curricular objectives for enhancing school readiness of children." Are you there yet? In times of ever changing standards and policies-is it possible? Can you keep up?
Absolutely! Join fellow practitioners from the Head Start community who have been collaborating on an exciting resource that aligns the Head Start Framework with the Common Core State Standards for Kindergarten. In this day-long session, participants will look at the importance, challenges, and benefits of aligning early education with the continuum of Common Core State Standards, now used in 46 states across the nation. Working in small groups, participants will bring additional viewpoints and expertise to an alignment resource to ensure it illustrates a continuity of learning outcomes. Participants will brainstorm strategies and discuss ways to help Head Start programs use this resource as a foundation to communicate a cohesive system of curricular objectives, school readiness goals, and appropriate K-12 expectations. Open discussions with colleagues will help all participants gain knowledge they might use to collaborate effectively in their own communities. Session participants will take home specific strategies, tools (including a draft of the alignment document), and knowledge to support their work with LEAs that build connections and improve children's transitions to public school. This is an interactive session; bring a laptop or Netbooks if possible.
