A Head Start Valentine

Valentine’s Day is nearly here, and it’s another opportunity to maintain a relationship with your Members of Congress. During the first two weeks of February, we encourage you to take this quick and easy advocacy step to keep your representatives aware of the good work you do and the need for their support.

Just a few quick steps:

  1. Print this Valentine coloring sheet and have your students complete it.

  2. Adapt this template letter for each of your Members of Congress (two senators and at least one representative).   Find out who your Members of Congress are at  www.contactingthecongress.org.

  3. Find their office address and send them your Valentines! Click on any Member’s name at www.contactingthecongress.org to get their DC and district office mailing addresses.

In terms of the ground rules for Head Start advocacy, this is an activity all Head Start programs can participate in freely because its goal is to educate Members of Congress about your programs, not to lobby for a particular budget item or funding source. That doesn’t mean it’s unimportant - educating Congress about the work you do can only help them understand how important it is to support you! We strongly encourage all programs to build and sustain strong relationships with their representatives.
