Head Start Reauthorization Update

On Wednesday, December 5, 2007 the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, Senator Edward Kennedy, Congressman George Miller, Congressman Kildee, Congressman Castle and a host of other members of congress, held a send-off ceremony for the “Improving Head Start Act of 2007” . The Speaker, Senator Kennedy and Congressman Castle acknowledged the support of the Head Start community in making this reauthorization a reality.

The Speaker signed the bill and it was sent to President Bush for his signature into law. The President has 10 days to sign the bill into law.     

The ceremony in the United States Capitol was covered by the press and well attended by coalition partners and members of the Head Start community, including Early Head Start, American Indian/Alaskan Native, and Migrant/Seasonal Head Start representatives.  

More importantly, Head Start children, parents, teachers, staff and the Executive Director from the Edward C. Mazique Child Center, Washington, DC, were the guests of honor. Cynthia Martinez a Head Start child from the Edward C. Mazique Child Center assisted the Speaker in signing the bill.
