$7 Billion Restored to Senate Human Services Budget
The National Head Start Association is happy to report that the Specter-Harkin amendment to the U.S. Senate budget resolution for FY 2007– which adds $7 billion to restore funding to human services such as Head Start, child care, education, and health and nutrition programs – was passed on March 16th by a 73-27 vote.
NHSA greatly appreciates the efforts of Senators Specter and Harkin in acknowledging the critical state of human service programs in our country after the past years of inadequate funding. Referring to this inadequate funding, Sen. Specter stated
“We have done more than cut out the fat, we have done more than cut through the muscle, we have done more than cut through the bone; we have cut into the marrow.”
Their efforts, and the votes of additional Senators, sent a strong message of concern for the funding crisis. The measure could bring meaningful funding increases to Head Start programs if it makes it through conference with the House. |
