Dollar-Per-Child

Dollar per Child Campaign

With your help:
We can ensure that the voices of more than one million under-privileged children and their families are heard!

What is the Dollar per Child Campaign?
NHSA’s goal is to raise $1 for every child enrolled in Head Start. The Dollar per Child campaign specifically supports the National Head Start Association’s advocacy activities. This year’s campaign runs until June 2008.

How were 2006-2007 Dollar per Child funds spent?
NHSA used the Dollar per Child funds to maintain high media visibility about Head Start issues, hold trainings on current Head Start legal issues, and impact public policy and legislation. Here are some of our legislative successes:

  • NHSA worked to increase funding for Head Start programs and it worked! This year funding will be increased $103 million for 2007.
  • NHSA is advocating for:
    1. Maintaining the full authority of the parent policy council.
    2. Increasing income eligibility from the current 100% of the poverty level to 130% of the poverty level.
    3. Only programs with “unresolved deficiencies need to re-compete their grant.
    4.  Increasing the set-aside for Migrant programs (5%) and Indian (4%) programs as well as the Early Head Start set-aside increase to 20% by 2012.

What can you do to help make Head Start voices heard?

  • Head Start employees can contribute with a payroll deduction. Parents can collect personal donations at parent meetings.
  • Invite friends and families to contribute. No amount is too small!
  • Organize a fundraising event. Local programs and state and regional associations have raised money through sporting events such as walk-a-thons, dance-offs, and bowling contests; special events like fairs, bake sales, and raffles; and the sale of promotional items like buttons, stickers, and pins.
