Science as Play Webinar Series
PEEP and the Big Wide World

About the Webinars

NHSA invites members to participate in a new webinar series that is part of its long-standing partnership with public television’s PEEP and the Big Wide World. PEEP is both a science series and a free 6-unit STEM curriculum for preschool funded by the National Science Foundation.

These webinars will demonstrate what research tells us about how young children learn science, about what makes a good topic for science investigation, and how both parents and teachers can best support children's curiosity. The first presentation in this series is for NHSA Family Managers. The ensuing webinars will address each topic in the Peep Science Curriculum, respectively. All are welcome to join for a deeper dive into Shadows, Water, Plants, Ramps, Sound, and/or Color.

Series Presenter:
Gay Mohrbacher, Educational Outreach Project Director at WGBH.

After registering for each webinar, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

Webinar 1: Science as Play – Bilingual Resources from PEEP and the Big Wide World

Oct 7, 2015 3:00 PM EDT

On October 7, 2015 at 3:00 pm EST, NHSA invites its Family Managers to a 40-min webinar demonstrating why it’s important that families embrace science play at home and what that actually looks like. For many parents, “science” conjures up lab coats or microscopes. Such clichés can inspire intimidation around engaging children in science explorations at home. Truth is, preschool science looks a lot like play! Children learn about the world from direct, hands-on contact with things. They need to see, touch, and do; a parent’s role is to help them. Family Managers will learn about free translated (Spanish and English) resources from public television’s, PEEP and the Big Wide World, and discover how easy/fun it is to encourage children’s natural curiosity.

Learning Goals:

  • Learn what inquiry-based science actually looks like for children ages 3 to 5
  • Be able to explain why families should embrace science learning at home
  • Outline the parent’s role in supporting children’s innate curiosity
  • Identify STEM learning opportunities that can happen at home
  • Locate bilingual parent/child science resources on the PEEP and the Big Wide World website

Webinar 2: Exploring Shadows

Oct 21, 2015 3:00 PM EST

On October 21, 2015 at 3:00 pm EST, NHSA invites members to a 30-min webinar that is part of its long-standing partnership with public television’s PEEP and the Big Wide World. Webinar participants will dive deeply into PEEP’s three-week unit on Shadows, coming away with an understanding of the science, math, and literacy/language concepts being conveyed, of how to weave 90-120 minutes of shadow exploration into a day’s agenda, and how to access PD videos modeling teaching strategies used in the context of this unit.

Learning Goals:

  • Distinguish why Shadows is an appropriate topic for multi-week science investigation in a classroom of 3 to 5-year olds and what science (math and ELA) concepts are being conveyed
  • Recognize how well organized, intentionally planned learning spaces encourage children to explore with specific materials and learning goals in mind
  • Learn how to effectively encourage “science talk” during activities
  • Discover different ways to document children’s work for later reflection
  • Develop options for children’s varied abilities, experiences, and interests
