Strategies to Improve Your Facilities, Children's Health, and Your Budget

The call to go green has garnered a great deal of attention over the past several years.  Head Start agencies are uniquely positioned to have an impact on both the environment and children's health, while saving critical funds during a time of austerity.  In this full-day session, you will hear from national experts in early education facilities, work with proven tools to advance your maintenance strategies and learn from peers who are seeing the results everyday from their organizations green strategies.  The National Head Start Association is pleased to partner with the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)/Community Investment Collaborative for Kids (CICK), drawing from their recently published guide to Greening Early Childhood Centers.  In addition, attendees will study the proven strategies of GreenCare's, Go Green Rating Scale for Early Childhood Settings.

During this session you will learn the fundamentals of green facility design and practice, and common sense considerations related to

o   Energy and Water Conservation;

o   Indoor Environmental Quality;

o   Recycling, Reuse, and Green Materials, and

o   Staying Green: Center Operations and Maintenance.

You will learn first-hand how to use the Go Green Checklist to guide your facilities with special attention paid to cleaning and pesticides use, including management decisions and policies.

The day will conclude with a panel of Head Start program managers who will discuss their experiences in taking concrete steps to move a green agenda forward.
