Eligibility
Organization must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in good standing, or another organization eligible to receive grants and tax-deductible donations, with a Head Start and/or Early Head Start program that is a current member of the National Head Start Association. Previous Cooking Matters at the Store (formerly “Shopping Matters”) grantees may re-apply.
Grant Cycle
Applications will be accepted beginning May 6, 2013 through November 1, 2013. Grant cycle closes with all shopping tours completed by December 15, 2013. Completed W-9 form must be received in order to process mini-grant.
Grant Requirements
Each grantee commits to reaching a minimum of 25 distinct participants through a minimum of three Cooking Matters at the Store tours between May 6, 2013 and December 15, 2013. Organizations may apply for more than one mini-grant.
Each grantee will also:
- Distribute a paper-based post-tour survey and enrollment form to each participant to complete after each tour.
- Distribute a paper-based post-tour evaluation to the facilitator to complete after each tour.
- Return the completed surveys and evaluation forms to National Head Start Association within one week of completing the tour (details to be addressed in orientation webinar).
- Share tour, dates and locations with National Head Start Association staff in advance and anticipate a tour observation.
Eligible Uses of Funding:
The grant aims to help organizations or individuals develop or grow the number of Cooking Matters at the Store tours in their community; therefore, the grant funds may be tailored to fit your organization and community’s needs or particular barriers to implementation. For example, grant funds may be used to:
- Supplement additional staff time.
- Hire a translator for the tour.
- Offer childcare to participants during the tour.
- Offer transportation to and from the store.
- Print informational and/or recruitment flyers.
- Submit a press release.
- Advertise the tour in local media.
- Provide gas or transportation vouchers to participants
- Purchase any other incentive items (notes pads for shopping lists, etc.).
We encourage grantee organizations to work with the grocery store to receive additional funding to support the $10 challenge. When speaking with the store manager, remind them of the benefits to their business of partnering with you to bring in-store education to their present or potential customers.
Share Our Strength’s Commitment:
Every Cooking Matters at the Store grant recipient/organization will receive instructions on how to order tour materials through the online fulfillment center once they have signed and returned their grant agreement. The materials and shipment are provided free of cost.
Grantees will also be enrolled in a Cooking Matters at the Store learning environment in July 2013 where they can access additional training modules, share best practices and resources with facilitators, ask questions to facilitators across the country and view additional tools and resources to enhance your tour.
Each grantee can order:
- Facilitator talking points flip book (Available in both English and Spanish)
- Participant manuals (Available in both English and Spanish)
- Reusable grocery bags for participants
- Post-tour participant surveys
- Enrollment forms for participants
- Tour reporting forms for facilitators
