This week, the House Appropriations Committee set the maximum funding level for the labor, health, and human services appropriations bill, which includes Head Start and Early Head Start, at $30 billion below current funding levels. Late last week, NHSA submitted written testimony to the Senate Appropriations Committee in support of funding for Head Start and Early Head Start. Earlier this week, Rep. George Miller (CA) and Rep. Dale Kildee (MI) sent a letter to Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health, and Human Services, and to Rep. Rosa Delauro (CT), Ranking Member of the same committee, asking for $8.1 billion for Head Start in FY2012. Head Start alumna, Rep. Loretta Sanchez sent a similar letter. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, and Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius announced that of the $700 million included in the FY2011 budget for Race to the Top, $500 million would go to a state-level grant competition focused on early learning.
