The proposed Federal budget, which is still in committee on Capitol Hill, proposes cutting the Department of Education's Even Start program. President Obamna plans to cut the program altogether, favoring Head Start.

NHSA program member Southern Kennebec Child Development Corporation will offer a home-based Early Head Start program this fall. Other organizations offering home-visiting programs are not able to serve all interested families, so the Early Head Start program is a much-needed addition in Kennebec County.

Head Start parents organized the Polacca Head Staert Gareden Project to create an "edible schoolyard" at the Hopi Head Start center in Polacca, Arizona. The project incorporates permaculture principles and traditional knowledge and was launched at a Planting Celebration this summer.
