Migrant Seasonal Head Start Graduates Take DC!

This summer, the National Migrant Seasonal Head Start Association hosted three college students and Migrant Seasonal Head Start alumni for internships in Washington, DC. Learn about their amazing stories and their experiences this summer in their own words on their blog.

Innovation Survey

Head Start and Early Head Start programs across the country are so effective because they each work hard to meet the unique needs of their communities. Yet the innovative practices that arise from these efforts are not well understood nationally. NHSA wants to feature programs that have found special ways to serve their communities! Let us know what your program does that’s extraordinary by taking our Innovation Survey today!

Celebrate the new year with First Day!

A new school year brings new beginnings, new children, and new opportunities to help your community engage with the mission of Head Start. NHSA encourages you to invite all your partners - and even those who might not know you so well - to celebrate the beginning of the new year with a First Day event designed to help educate your community about the importance of the work you do. Learn more here.

Early Learning at a Crossroads: Registration now open!

NHSA’s Fall 2012 Leadership Institute is designed to provide the policy insights, tools, and advocacy that will strengthen the effectiveness of Head Start program leaders as they participate in important discussions about the future of early learning and Head Start. The effect of the upcoming presidential election, funding challenges, developments in monitoring reform, the anticipated September release of the third grade results of the Head Start Impact Study, and states’ experiments with early learning systems will be explored and participants will get powerful advocacy training before meeting with their Members of Congress.

The institute will take place in Washington DC, September 19-21. Learn more and register today!

NHSA Parent Conference 2012: Call for Presenters

Coming Up on August 15th: Understanding Head Start and Early Head Start Eligibility. A Head Start Legal Advisory Service Webinar

LAS SaleStart your year off right. Attend the Head Start Legal Advisory Service upcoming webinar on Head Start Eligibility, led by Ted Waters, of Feldesman Tucker Leifer Fidell LLP, to ensure your program determines eligibility correctly. The Head Start Legal Advisory Service is a collaboration between the law firm of Feldesman Tucker Leifer Fidell LLP and the National Head Start Association. Click here for the full schedule of Head Start Legal Advisory Service webinars and to learn about our new reduced pricing.

On Wednesday, August 15th from 3-5 pm EST, Ted Waters will help your program comply with the often confusing eligibility rules. ACF's Program Instruction, HS-10-02, Income Eligibility for Enrollment, addresses how Head Start employees must determine and verify income eligibility. The PI states that programs "should provide annual training to employees responsible for determining and verifying income eligibility and to ensure that those employees are fully aware of the consequences established by the grantee for employees who knowingly sign a verification form that contains false information." So be sure to sign up your whole team for this webinar!

We'll cover not only the basics of the Head Start eligibility process, but also discuss the consequences of knowing violations of the eligibility rules. At the end of this webinar, you will be able to:

  • Describe what the Head Start eligibility rules are (and, which are mandatory or optional);
  • Observe where the pitfalls lie for your program in determining eligibility (including reviewing eligibility documents and signing income verification forms); and
  • Verify if your program is in compliance with the requirements of the Improving Head Start for School Readiness Act, PIs, and the Head Start Policy Clarifications.

Tips for best practices will be included and your questions will be addressed.

Who Should Attend: Eligibility Workers, Eligibility Managers, ERSEA staff, Executive Directors, Head Start program Directors, and other senior staff, but all are welcome.

Look before you lock." Check out the information they’ve prepared and materials you can distribute to parents.
