Twenty-Eight Million Children
Shout out this week to programs in Nebraska, North Carolina, Missouri and California that send in group photos of their graduating Head Start classes! Check them out here and don’t forget to send in your own! E-mail pictures to Emmalie (edropkin@nhsa.org) and be sure to include program name, center name, city and state. Survey on Early Childhood MonitoringThe implementation of the Designation Renewal System and incorrect reporting of the Head Start Impact Study have created an urgent need for the Head Start community to clearly define what makes a high quality program and to have a trusted system that allows programs to demonstrate that they are of high quality. Responding to this need, NHSA has formed a Monitoring Task Force to develop a proposal for a Head Start monitoring system that assures compliance and promotes excellence. If we don’t advance our vision for Head Start quality now, we’ll lose this opportunity to be agents of change in the future of monitoring. The Task Force has created two surveys and invites you to fill out one or both as you feel is appropriate. Surveys will be open until 6/13/12.
Send Us Your Annual Report
Head Start and Early Head Start programs have touched more than a million lives this year - and we want to make sure the President and his Administration understand that! NHSA is currently gathering annual reports from programs across the country and will compile and deliver them to President Obama. Send a copy of your latest annual report to Tommy Sheridan at tsheridan@nhsa.org. We can also help you get local press coverage for your report if you’re interested! Join Nonprofit VOTE for Webinar on Nonprofit Voter Registration
Registering to vote is the first step to becoming an active and engaged voter. In 2008, nine out of ten registered voters cast a ballot; among those who did not vote, many noted that they encountered problems with their registration. Join this webinar Thursday, June 14th at 2:00pm Eastern to learn how your program can ensure that your clients and constituents are registered to vote and able to participate in this year's election! We'll help you create a voter registration plan, develop strategies and tactics for registering community members, ensure you remain nonpartisan, and more. Register at https://cc.readytalk.com/cc/s/showReg?udc=lwuq6kftbe1v. The NHSA Academy: Basic Family Services and Health Services Credential Program
Designed especially for Head Start Family and Health Service Providers, the Academy Basic Family Services and Health Services Credential Program is a distance education, self-study course that offers an opportunity for family and health staff to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in 12 competency areas that are rooted in the Head Start Program Performance Standards. Family and Health staff will reflect on their professional practice and gain insight into ways that Head Start services can be enhanced. In addition, Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are offered to candidates who successfully complete the credential. Candidates can work at their own pace and have six months to complete the course. There are no registration timelines, which means, registration is available year round. For more information visit www.nhsa.org or contact Carleen Wallington Kinlock, NHSA Professional Development Manager, at cwallingtonkinlock@nhsa.org or (703) 299-7513. Take a Survey to Support the Farm to Preschool Effort
Are you affiliated with a preschool, childcare or early care program that works to incorporate local food into meals and snacks, or that educates children about where food comes from and how it is grown? The National Farm to School Network works to make the connection between schools, students, and local food; the Network recently formed a Farm to Preschool Subcommittee to support similar activities for early care and education programs as well. As part of this effort, the Subcommittee is conducting a survey of Farm to Preschool programs in order to get a better picture of what’s happening around the country. If you think your program might qualify (even if you don’t use the name “Farm to Preschool”), you can learn more and take the survey here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NationalFarmtoPreschoolSurvey2012. The survey will be open until June 30th, and one survey respondent will be randomly selected to receive $500 toward their Farm to Preschool efforts.
