Statement: Program Instruction on Supplemental Funds Available to Extend Duration of Services in Head Start and Early Head Start

April 25, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families released a Program Instruction offering guidance and supplemental funding to extend full-day programming in Head Start.

The following statement should be attributed to National Head Start Association Executive Director, Yasmina Vinci.

“Today’s Program Instruction is helpful guidance for programs choosing to apply for supplemental funding to extend hours without cutting access to services for current Head Start children. We are particularly pleased the Administration carefully considered the Head Start community’s input about how to define and extend full-day options and framed the Program Instruction in a way that is flexible and reflects the importance of locally determined program designs. The Congressional allocation of $294 million to fund the increase of classroom time for Head Start programs is a solid down payment on the future of our nation’s most vulnerable children.”
