KATRINA AID ORGANIZED THOUGH HEAD START PROGRAMS IN MISSISSIPPI, ALABAMA AND NEW ORLEANS AREA IN LOUISIANA

National Head Start Association Working to Funnel Help Where It Is Needed the Most; 136 Head Start Programs in Three States Serve 71,764 Poor Children and Parents.

WASHINGTON, D.C.///September 8, 2005///With support from Johnson & Johnson, the National Head Start Association (NHSA) is working with three central Head Start programs in the New Orleans area, Mississippi and Alabama to get help directly to the low-income parents and children who need it most.

NHSA has identified three Head Start programs that are coordinating in-state relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina:

The three Head Start grantees will distribute food, cash, and goods to Head Start families, staff, and others affected by the storm. Contributions are greatly needed and are 100 percent tax deductible. Checks should be made payable to one or more of the three agencies listed above. Please note on the check that it is for “Katrina hurricane relief.”

NHSA President and CEO Sarah Greene said: “Our goal here is to do whatever we can to assist Head Start families, staff, and other poor families in states affected by Hurricane Katrina. These three agencies are acting as the conduits for aid in their states. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of the victims of this terrible tragedy. The Head Start community will work together to help ease the tremendous suffering and hardship now being experienced.”
