What is the Earned Income Tax Credit?
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is an economic empowerment tool consisting of a refundable federal tax credit for eligible individuals and families who have worked and earned income for all or part of a calendar year.

The National Head Start Association, in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS’s)Community Outreach Division, invites you to learn more about the EITC. This Resource Center provides links to information that can help you to understand the EITC so that you, in turn, can help Head Start families understand this important economic empowerment tool. Many families don’t know about the EITC and may be missing an important opportunity to benefit. In 2004, the Head Start Bureau released an Information Memorandum urging all Head Start programs to increase their outreach to and education of families on the EITC.
