What is Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors Training Network?

The Network has three elements:

  • Technical assistance and facilitator stipends (2013-2014)
  • Online learning community to support facilitators working with local programs to support parent courses.

Abriendo Puertas is the nation's first evidence-based parent leadership and advocacy training program for Latino parents with children 0-5 years of age. The program was developed in Spanish and provides a linguistically and culturally relevant curriculum. The curriculum is centered on the cultural values, strengths, and experiences of Latino families and uses popular education and folk wisdom. This approach engages parents at a very personal level and results in transformative learning.

Through a unique "train-the-trainer" program, Abriendo Puertas fully prepares local community leaders to become facilitators in delivering the program to parents in their neighborhood.

When is the Next Training?

No upcoming Abriendo Puertas training at this time.

Who Should Apply?

NHSA is seeking experienced Head Start staff that work closely with families and are comfortable providing trainings to colleagues in a two full-day format. Individuals should review the scholarship criteria for additional information. As noted in the application, NHSA strongly recommends that individuals apply in training teams of two. This will strengthen their ability to provide effective trainings at regional, state or local conferences.

How are regional and state associations connected to the Network?

NHSA is excited to have secured funding to support 20, two-day facilitator trainings to be conducted at regional or state events for local family service staff during the next program year. Similar to the national training, these regional/state trainings may be in Spanish or in English. NHSA will provide an additional training stipend and materials, Abriendo Puertas creators and coaches will provide technical assistance.
