WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, the Senate Labor, Health and Human Services & Education Appropriations Subcommittee released details of legislation providing Fiscal Year 2012 appropriations for the Department of Health and Human Services. The legislation provides sufficient funding for Head Start and Early Head Start centers to maintain current services across the country.
"By providing sufficient funding for Head Start and Early Head Start, the Senate LHHS Appropriations Subcommittee today demonstrated a strong commitment to at-risk children and families across the country. With 46 million people living below the poverty line, including more than 25 percent of children under age six, Head Start is a lifeline to almost one million children each year.
As elected officials struggle to make difficult decisions about how best to restore our nation's economic security, I am grateful to members of the Subcommittee for choosing to maintain this wise investment in our collective future. The critical early education, health and support services Head Start provides to poor children and families create a proven, solid foundation for lifelong success.
