Washington, D.C. – Today, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed legislation to fund Head Start and Early Head Start in Fiscal Year 2013. The following statement should be attributed to Yasmina Vinci, executive director of the National Head Start Association:
“In this tough budgetary environment, I applaud the Senate Appropriation Committee’s dedication to keeping open the window of opportunity that Head Start offers nearly one million at-risk children from birth through age five each year. The funding level represents a shared commitment to providing our neediest children access to quality early education, health and support services and ensures the vulnerable children and families currently enrolled in Head Start are able to continue accessing critical early learning services. With more than 45 million people living below the poverty line, including more than 25 percent of children under age six, we urge the House of Representatives to join their Senate colleagues in funding Head Start at a level that reflects the exploding demand for Head Start programs.”
