FAQs About the Academy
(Frequently Asked Questions)
Why do I need an NHSA Academy Administrator or Mid-Manager credential?
The National Head Start Association understands the importance of enlisting well trained administrators and managers to fulfill the mission of Head Start.. Therefore, NHSA offers two management focused credentials to suit the needs of those in a variety of Head Start management positions.
How long will it take to earn my credential?
Both credentials are offered through a program design that is comprised of two learning components: 1) an intensive week long experience, 2) the completion of reading and response assignments prior to and during the program. (Attendees registering late will have to make up required readings and responses after their attendance if they wish their credential to be issued.)
Administrator or Mid Manager? What’s the difference?
Both credentials are appropriate for all Head Start professionals who have worked with the program for two or more years. Since no two Head Start programs are alike and each is designed to meet unique community needs, deciding which credential is best for you may depend on how your program is structured and the role you play in your program’s day to day operations. To decide which program is best for you, review NHSA’s online descriptions for each credential and ask yourself these questions:
- What set of skills do I wish to enhance?
- How much contact do I have supervising direct service employees?
- What are the responsibilities of my current position?
- What are the future expectations for the duties of my position?
- Where does my position ‘sit’ within my agency structure?
Who teaches the courses?
Academy courses are taught by seasoned Head Start or early childhood professionals, university professors, or others well qualified by a combination of experience and education to provide a quality learning experience.
New Versus Experienced Head Start Professionals?
Each course is supported by targeted readings and candidate response forums that are used to develop a candidate portfolio. Readings and question forums are adjusted to meet the needs of both new and experienced Head Start professionals. Some pre-reading may be required in preparation.
