Head Start Advocate Update: Infrastructure, ECE, and Two Alumni in the Senate Last week we looked at all the work the House of Representatives has done for Head Start in the 117th Congress. On the other side of the hill, Head Start has seen tremendous support from the Senate, too. Let’s take a look. In January, nine new Senate members joined the 117th Congress… We were proud to welcome two Head Start alumni: Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia and Sen. Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico. While there are and have been many Head Start alumni in the House, Sen. Warnock and Sen. Lujan are the first two Head Start alumni to serve in the Senate! In February, President Biden’s new nominees took the stand… The Senate started their process to appoint Xavier Becerra as the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees Head Start. During his time in Congress and as an Attorney General of California, Mr. Becerra was a champion for Head Start children and families. Head Start Advocate Update: Visits, Budgets, and an Alumna in the House Much has happened in the Senate in the last eight months. Let’s take a moment to look back at some of the actions the House of Representatives took this year to support Head Start, and what is on the horizon in the final leg of the year. In January, we met the 117th Congress… At the start of the new year 62 new members were elected into the House of Representatives. These freshman members of Congress now sit on key committees that have a hand in legislation affecting Head Start and Early Head Start, including the House Appropriations Committee and the House Committee on Education and Labor. Both Committees welcomed my new faces from the Freshmen Class and returning Members including Head Start alumna Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández (NM-3) who now sits on the Education and Labor Committee.
