Wide Open School (Common Sense Media)

NHSA has partnered with Common Sense Media and 25 other trusted education and technology organizations to launch Wide Open School. This online hub seeks to make learning from home an experience that inspires kids, supports teachers, relieves families, and restores community.

At you’ll find a free collection of the best online learning experiences for kids curated by the editors at Common Sense. There is so much good happening, and Wide Open School is here to gather the great stuff and organize it so teachers and families can easily find it and plan each day.

Noggin Cares (Nickelodeon)

To help families learn and stay healthy while they are spending more time at home in the coming months, we are proud to partner with Nickelodeon to make the following resources available free of charge to anyone in the Head Start community:

  • Free Noggin Subscription: A three-month subscription to the mobile learning platform, Noggin. Noggin has hundreds of read-aloud e-books, developmentally appropriate games, songs, and other engaging content for preschoolers. Head Start families can access these resources for free by following the simple step-by-step instructions in this letter;
  • Off-Screen Play: A weekly series of off-screen play activities for young children and families to use to develop strong hearts, minds, and bodies;
  • Health and Wellness Materials: A series of special videos and materials that synthesize expert advice on handling the public health emergency. It will promote supportive family conversations, including suggestions on how to get guidance on healthy child development.

Caring for Each Other (Sesame Street)

Children thrive with a structure in their lives and they learn best through play, even in everyday moments like mealtimes and morning and evening routines. This site provides content and resources from Sesame Street that you can use with your family to offer comfort and spark imagination through playful learning activities.


Learn at Home (Scholastic)

Keep students academically active with 20 days of meaningful learning journeys. This free digital learning hub from Scholastic features daily virtual learning plans designed to keep kids reading, thinking, and growing.


Preschool Learning at Home (PBS Kids)

Explore parent resources to help you raise kind, curious and resilient children, find parenting tips, and more! PBS Kids offers free resources to support your child's early learning in literacy, math, and science.


Healthy at Home Toolkit (Ready Rosie)

Keep students academically active with 20 days of meaningful learning journeys. This free digital learning hub from Scholastic features daily virtual learning plans designed to keep kids reading, thinking, and growing.


Daily Schedule and Activities (Teaching Strategies)

In addition to the Healthy at Home Toolkit, Teaching Strategies is offering additional free, customizable resources to help you stay connected and engaged with families. These resources include sample preschool daily schedules and activities for families at home.


Learning at Home: Pre-K Collection (AFT)

These resources highlight simple ways to stay informed on being healthy, tips for engaging with your children on academic subjects, and a variety of resources addressing the social and emotional needs of children who may have experienced trauma.

Vroom (Bezos Family Foundation)

Vroom provides free science-based tips and tools to inspire families to turn shared, everyday moments into Brain Building Moments®. Vroom tools are there to help boost early learning wherever caregivers are. The app, Vroom by Text™ and Alexa skill harness the power of technology. And print at home resources are only a click away.


Sykbrary (Reading is Fundamental)

RIF is making Skybrary available for free for 30 days. Their digital library features almost 1,000 eBooks across many topics and genres to engage and excite young readers; hundreds of video field trips hosted by LeVar Burton; and a read-to-me narration option for every book to support new or struggling readers.


Khan Academy Kids (Khan Academy)

This award-winning app includes thousands of educational activities, books, songs, and games for toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners, and first graders. Khan Academy Kids was developed in collaboration with learning experts at Stanford University and aligns with the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework and Common Core Standards.


Tinkergarten at Home (Tinkergarten)

Educational DIY activities and virtual Tinkergarten classes foster at-home learning that is easy to follow, wildly fun, and great for families looking for more at-home activities during program closures.


EiE Families (Boston Museum of Science)

Created by the Boston Museum of Science, these hands-on, research-based activities promote collaborative problem-solving and build confidence in families’ understanding of the STEM disciplines.


Talk, Read, Sing" Indoor Activities Kit (Talking is Teaching)

These resources from Talking is Teaching provide you with ways you can talk, read, sing, and play your way through the day—just with things you might already have indoors.


Homer (First Book)

HOMER is a personalized learn-to-read program that includes a library of interactive stories and songs. It is currently being offered for free on the First Book Marketplace to early learning professionals serving children in need.


Frog Street for Young Learners (Frog Street)

This free online resource offers extensive content from Frog Street’s award-winning curriculums to use at home. These engaging materials of over 250 English and Spanish electronic books, activities, and songs offer the first step toward empowering families and educators with the tools needed to influence academic growth at home.


NatGeo @ Home (National Geographic)

National Geographic is offering free collections of activities that have been curated for educators, parents, and caregivers to implement with K–12 learners.


Shine at Home (Acellero Learning)

Early Learning resources updated weekly geared toward infants, toddlers and preschoolers.
