Supporting Teachers in Understanding the CLASS Dimensions as a Means to Establishing a Positive Classroom Environment

Every teacher’s plan should promote young children’s development of social skills and emotional self-regulation. This session will introduce resources to promote positive teacher-child interactions. By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Create a structure that supports children’s relationships with each other and promote positive interactions.
  • Identify the strategies that help teachers interact positively with children throughout the day. 
  • Use the Dimensions of Emotional Support from the Class Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) to promote the interactions that are critical to high classroom quality. 
  • Strengthen skills related to achieving positive teacher–child interactions.

Interacting with the CLASS Tool: How to Help Teachers Understand and Engage in High Level Instructional Supports

This presentation will address the “nuts and bolts” of supporting teachers as they work to implement CLASS standards in their classrooms. The workshop will 

  • provide a framework for our work with teachers; 
  • give an overview of the CLASS Instructional Supports dimensions, indicators, and behavioral markers, with special attention to the nuances of different scoring levels; 
  • address challenges coaches and education coordinators face as they work to engage teachers in the process of ongoing professional development; 
  • make specific recommendations for the articulation and development of key CLASS-based teacher-child interactions. 

Education Specialists, Coaches, Directors, and Master Teachers are encouraged to attend.

Some are suggesting that it may also change how the health needs of Head Start children are addressed, possibly affecting the future for Head Start's model of providing comprehensive health services.
