Head Start Reads is an national initiative highlighing Head Start’s longstanding commitment to language and literacy.

Head Start believes in the transformative power of literacy.

The ability to read and communicate connects people to one another and empowers them to move through the world. Early literacy skills are one of the strongest indicators of a child’s future success and are critical to school readiness, healthy families, a strong economy, and a thriving democracy.

One out of three children entering kindergarten lack the basic skills needed to learn to read. And, right now, 54% of American adults struggle to read, write, and comprehend, which impacts their ability to work, parent, and move with confidence through daily life.

The Head Start Reads campaign equip parents, caregivers, and early education educators with literacy and learning tools to help children thrive.
