According to the Partnership for a Healthier America, approximately 1 in 3 children between the ages of 2-19 are overweight or obese in the United States. This can lead to many diseases and health related problems that in the past were thought of as adult medical conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

Since its inception in 1965, Head Start has emphasized the importance of nutrition and healthy food choices for children and families.  One way in which many early educators have addressed this national problem is by making healthy living options fun and accessible through Head Start gardens.  These gardens enable the children and parents to get outside, garden, learn about plants and gain nourishment from their very own creations!

In partnership with NHSA’s Healthy Living Ambassador, Top Chef judge Hugh Acheson, Head Start programs all over the nation are now able to apply for a Garden Grant from NHSA to help them begin their own center garden! Beginning in 2017, Hugh Acheson’s Georgia-based restaurants will raise funds to support these gardens by featuring a special Head Start dish on their menus at Empire State South in Atlanta and Five & Ten in Athens!

Whether you would like to start small with vegetables on a windowsill, potted plants outside or a full garden with planter boxes, we welcome you to apply for a Garden Grant. Through this healthy living initiative, NHSA’s Garden Grants Project aims to support Head Start centers in their journey in cultivating a more hands-on, healthy lifestyle for the children and families they serve!

Please note: grants will be awarded based on a variety of factors including potential impact, need, amount of funds raised and the timely manner in which applications are received. Informational resources and guides on how to start your garden will also be provided to those awarded a grant.
