Recycle Your Way to STEAM Initiative Seeks to Engage One Million Head Start Children
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today the White House held the 6th and final White House Science Fair of President Obama’s Administration, highlighting the ingenuity and entrepreneurship of our nation’s brightest young minds, and celebrating the work of organizations who are paving the way for the next generation of innovators.
The White House recognized “Recycle Your Way to STEAM,” a joint effort of the National Head Start Association and Lakeshore Learning Materials to introduce young children to 21st century skills.
“Recycle Your Way to STEAM” is a set of engaging, hands-on activities that invite children to build anything they can imagine— using cardboard, plastic bottles and other recyclable materials. Simple and child-directed, the activities introduce STEAM concepts in an age-appropriate way that engages children’s interest in exploration of the world around them.
“Watching a child’s creativity come alive is truly an amazing sight to see and the Recycle Your Way to STEAM initiative is the perfect way to encourage it,” said Kevin Carnes, Lakeshore President. “We’re tremendously honored to be recognized by the White House for promoting these critical skills in Head Start classrooms nationwide.”
The project set a goal to reach one million Head Start children, preparing the country’s youngest learners for bright futures in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.
“Communities served by Head Start represent the nation’s most vulnerable children and families, who have been historically underrepresented in STEAM fields,” said NHSA Executive Director Yasmina Vinci. “We are proud to be recognized at the White House Science Fair, and even prouder to be working with Lakeshore to open windows of opportunity for our future innovators.”
