FY21 budget reconciliation bill recognizes Head Start’s critical need for COVID-19 relief

WASHINGTON, DC – The National Head Start Association (NHSA) today expressed gratitude to the U.S. House of Representatives for including $1 billion for Head Start in their FY21 budget reconciliation bill, which passed on February 27th. Part of President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, this additional funding would support Head Start’s continued efforts to deliver safe, high-quality services to at-risk children and their families during the pandemic.

“For nearly an entire year, Head Start programs have confronted the COVID-19 pandemic with extraordinary energy and attention to public health guidance, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have held up as a model for early learning settings operating in-person,” NHSA Executive Director Yasmina Vinci said. “We thank Head Start’s congressional champions for recognizing the stabilizing role Head Start is playing across the country with additional funds to support the significant additional costs that come with operating amid the pandemic.”

Vinci continued, “An additional $1 billion will enable Head Start to maintain its standard-setting services, which now include accommodations such as increased cleaning procedures, smaller class sizes, and facility adaptations. As even more programs open their doors for in-person learning and care, this funding will go a long way. We look forward to working with our many champions in the U.S. Senate to see this legislation advance so that these essential funds reach Head Start programs as soon as possible.”

The National Head Start Association is a not-for-profit organization committed to the belief that every child, regardless of circumstances at birth, has the ability to succeed in school and in life.
